Turf & hardscape advice
How Much Does Turf Installation Actually Cost in LA?
Short answer: for most Southern California yards, a professionally installed synthetic turf lawn runs about $11 to $16 per square foot, installed. Small jobs hit a floor of $3,500. Everything else comes down to which turf you pick and what's under your yard right now.
Those are my numbers, from doing these installs myself. Here's how they break down.
Price per square foot, by turf tier
| Tier | Installed price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Value turf | ~$11 / sqft | Solid, budget-friendly. Good for side yards and low-traffic areas. |
| Sierra Ultra Dark | ~$13.50 / sqft | My most popular. Rich dark-green look, holds up well day to day. |
| SynLawn Premium (SynFescue, SynBlue) | ~$16 / sqft | Softest feel and the most natural blade look. Best for front yards people see. |
"Installed" means the turf, the base prep, the weed barrier, the infill and the labor. It's the number you actually pay, not just the roll price.
Why there's a $3,500 minimum
A 300 sqft patch still needs a crew on site, excavation, base material, compaction and cleanup. The setup work doesn't shrink much when the yard does. Below about 300 sqft, the job costs what it costs, so I set a $3,500 floor rather than quote something I can't do right.
What moves the price up
- Grading and drainage. If your yard is uneven or water sits in it, the base has to be reshaped first. I add about 15% for that.
- Putting greens. A green is built differently from a flat lawn, with more precise base work and contouring. I price those around $22 per sqft.
- Existing lawn removal. Ripping out old sod or a worn-out turf job takes labor and haul-off.
- Access. If everything has to be carried through a narrow side gate by hand, it takes longer.
Real examples
| Project | Estimated range |
|---|---|
| 300 sqft side yard, value turf | ~$3,200 – $3,850 (minimum applies) |
| 500 sqft, value turf | ~$5,060 – $6,050 |
| 1,000 sqft, Sierra Ultra Dark | ~$12,420 – $14,850 |
| 1,000 sqft, Sierra Ultra Dark, needs grading | ~$14,280 – $17,080 |
| 1,000 sqft, SynLawn Premium | ~$14,720 – $17,600 |
These are estimates. Your real quote depends on what I see when I walk the yard.
A warning about cheap quotes
Price isn't the best signal of quality, since turf itself often costs about the same regardless of brand tier. What changes the bill is labor, base prep, and whether the company is licensed, insured, and not subcontracting your job out. A quote that's dramatically below market usually means one of those got cut. The base is the part you never see again after install day, and it's the first place corners get cut.
